Have you ever wanted to work with Veterans or First Responders? This article offers a “glimpse” of what is possible within the scope of our practice, providing practical, safe and repeatable positive outcomes for those who serve us so well.
Who: Those in the military have served our country; first responders such as local law enforcement or sheriff’s office as well as the fire department also serve our society. Their commitment and sacrifice to maintain the freedoms we all hold dear deserves our dedication. Over the last 4 years, my work has evolved to assist those who have served, providing a multidisciplinary approach for those who desire direction and help for their mind, body, soul, and spirit.
What: Many wonder what points and approaches could successfully treat those with conditions caused by extreme military experiences and war. The best advice is to listen to the patient in front of you. As acupuncturists, our desire is to uplift and alleviate conditions, whether acute or chronic. The better we listen to the veteran, the better we can support and accelerate their healing process and know how to help. Some will not be able to divulge their history, or the trauma may be too great for them to recount. But we can still help them. In addition to acupuncture, I use many modalities such as Allergy Elimination, Flower Essence Therapy, Gemmo Therapy, Oligo Mineral Therapy, CranioSacral Therapy, Complex Homeopathy and BioEnergetic Testing, Bi-Digital O-Ring Testing and the Various Micro-Systems of the Scalp, Ear, Abdomen and Hand.
Where: There are many great options. Services can be provided at an office, a local VA clinic or regional VA hospital. Before treating veterans through the VA system, one must be credentialed to provide acupuncture services. For other first responders, additional credentialing may be required through various insurance carriers. Doing events with veterans or military officers is a great way to make connections with service members and those in command of their healthcare.
When: Why not begin now? As one of the fastest growing states in the US, Florida also ranks in the top three states for veteran occupancy. There are first responders in every community in need of help as well.
Why: Veterans suffer from PTSD and chronic pain to such a degree that we lose approximately 22 veterans a day due to suicide. Evidence shows that acupuncture can treat pain. In a 2021 study by the John Dingle VA in Detroit, there was a 50% reduction of opiate use for chronic pain through the use of acupuncture.
