Policy Statement on the Use of E-jiao and Xi Jiao

FSOMA promotes the ethical and humane treatment of animals used in Chinese Medicine.  As a result, FSOMA thanks People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for identifying some very concerning animal cruelty associated with the production of E Jaio (donkey hide gelatin/Colla Corii Asini (Lat.)) by some suppliers of this product.  In light of this information, FSOMA encourages manufacturers and providers to learn more about their suppliers’ cruelty-free policies to avoid supporting manufacturers engaged in cruelty and to consider taking steps to limit and avoid the use of E Jaio in their herbal formula products.
We also ask that suppliers at the FSOMA Conference either offer substitutes for E Jaio in their formulas or ensure that they source E Jaio from suppliers who are cruelty-free.
FSOMA looks forward to a day when these harmful practices are eliminated and hopes these measures will help minimize harm in the interim and encourage progress towards that goal.
FSOMA also supports a ban on the use of Xi Jiao (rhinoceros horn) in Chinese Medicine as horn sales drive poaching, biodiversity loss, cruelty, and destabilize source-nations’ governments.
